Some post Pre-Season loss thoughts

Football is back!  We are back baby, watching giant men crush each other shorten their lives and possibly permanently damage their grey matter.  Summer is still here in the great NW and with the Seattle Seahawks playing again it seems as if all is right with the world.  So here are a couple thoughts before Dad and I release our latest podcast sometime in the next couple of days!

Mr. McGough, reportedly has struggled in camp…..but I have to be honest…..That’s not what showed up on the field… MY OPINION.  Alex showed up and played behind the 2s and mostly the 3’s so what was the expectation.  He looked not horrible behind a make shift offensive line that was missing blocking assignments, not passing blitzes effectively and generally playing fairly poorly.  Alex was hitting his check downs, keeping his eyes down field and not just running.  He proved that he is athletic and can create out of nothing.  He didn’t throw an interception or fumble the ball.  I think this is good news and it would be interesting to see what he can do behind the 2’s or even the 1’s which is something I am positive we will see before the pre-season is over.  I continue to be a fan of this kid, while I am not in any way saying or advocating for him to supplant Russell I think his upside is incredible.

Rashaad Penny, although the numbers don’t show a great outing there were some signs.  As a fan you have to ask yourself and constantly remind yourself that that is what the pre-season is about.  It is NOT about cranking it all the way up and showing the league your cards.  But watching Penny bounce that run in the redzone to the outside for 7yds while out running smaller players that should be faster, was a thing of art work.  It gives you great hope going forward.  Although he struggled to find room later, I put more of that on the poor blocking and blitz recognition than I do on Penny’s ability to run the rock.  Also don’t forget, defense’s are usually ahead of where Offense is at this point of the season.  So….don’t pay attention to the stats at this point, watch the game….you tell me how he looks.

Defensive line, I think we are good and deep.  It was impressive to watch the defensive line move the line of scrimmage every play against every iteration that the Colts threw out there.  Specifically the 1’s.  Seattle consistently owned the line of Scrimmage….and not just a little.  Barkevious Mingo looked fast and exactly what we needed there, even while being double teamed and having Running Backs help the Tackle.  That kind of attention helps others get free.  And before we go any farther let’s also acknowledge that Indy while not a great Team has a GOOD offensive line.  They have spent time and money trying to get the right crew to protect Andrew Luck…..these guys are talented and good so when our 1’s dominate them…..I’m feeling pretty good.  Rasheem Green, looking good!  And not in the flashy sack stuff although that’s great too…his fundamentals look great.  This kid has some serious upside and I’m excited about what the future holds for him.  The rest of the fellas played as Dad and I have talked about for a while.  Solid.  Better than what the national conversation would have you believe.

Secondary play, well I loved it.  I love watching Tre Flowers.  He’s gonna be great.  I think he’s the starter by mid-season and it’s gonna be tough for opposing QB’s to choose where to throw.  T2 Was a bunch of fun to watch.  He was so much fun to watch in fact, that I think it has taken some of the stress out of an Earl Thomas holdout.  Sure Earl is Earl…..but if you don’t want to be a part of this and a leader in our locker room….I’m good.  Fine go then, fine I’m gone, fine go then, fine I’m gone (remember Waynes World).  I think that Earl probably watched the game and realized that these Seahawks are not going to miss Earl as much as Earl would like them too.

Bottom line folks, I’m excited for the season.  I’m encouraged by the competitive nature of this squad and I’m happier with this squad even if they go 8-8 than I am with last years squad.  I’d rather have the young hungry lion than the old lion sitting in the locker room being a bitch instead of the leader they should have been.  I’ll take 8-8 over what should have been 12-4 that somehow you found a way to dump to 9-7.  I don’t think these guys are going to be 8-8 by the way.  I think these guys are going to surprise some people and win between 9-11 games.  Hungry lions are dangerous.

Hey 12’s can I get a GO SEAHAWKS!  GAME DAY BABY!  Got to be excited to see our west coast boys in Blue get after it in a game setting for the first time in a little longer than we’ve been used to lately!  I mean come on this is exciting!  We finally get to see the fruits of some of the labor!  Is the O-line better than national media would like you to think!?  Are the running backs as truly competitive as we think they can be!?  I can not wait to see this crap finally on the field.

Here is a podcast that Dad and I have put together pre-pre-season game that we discussed a few things Earl because we had to deal with and some of the other crap that’s being said and continues to be said.  Stand by folks today marks the start of the roller coaster.  Put your hands up, lock the lap restraint in place and let’s get it on!

I wish I could yell louder!

So the scenario is this….I call to chat with the old man (Rob50) for a couple of minutes about our next podcast and end up yelling about our LB situation for half an hour.  Poor Bodi (my 1yr old son featured in many pictures) is crawling, walking, and falling around the house completely oblivious to the biggest weakness on this Seahawks team that no one is talking about.  Dad and I have been talking about it since the draft and yet here we are in OTA’s and no progression!

We have an emergent situation developing at LB in Seattle…..Now before you go all agro follow me through this thing.

I agree we have a couple of the best ones in the NFL!  KJ and Bobby are undeniably one of the best duos in the NFL.  Mingo is someone I am very very excited about.  He has the potential to be another great addition to what I see as a great “starting” group.

When we leave the starting line-up however my breath becomes a little rapid and strained.  I am worried.

DJ Alexander: Played serviceable and yet sparingly behind Whilhoite who started most of the season.  Even then DJ was also splitting time with Garvin.  To say my level of confidence is high on him would be an understatement, I hope that I am wrong.

Shaquem Griffin: Ya’ll know how I feel about this kid, at least you should at this point, if not go back listen to podcasts read another article!  I love this kid….BUT I don’t think he’s a LB.  I think he is the Heir-apparent to Kam Chancelor!  I will say this even when he starts as a LB.  He’s a better fit there for us.  Football is all about getting the BEST 11 on the field and this allows us to do that and when we do go into that 4-2-5 look we can still bring him down into the box and allow him to play much like a LB anyway!  There’s also some fun stuff you could do by bringing him on Safety Blitz packages that would be complicated to defend and a lot of fun to watch.  Besides that seems like the best way to expand a role he’s already comfortable in and limit some of the weaknesses.

Warren Long:  Ummm WHO!?  yeah I didn’t know either so I looked him up.  This seems like a project at best.  And he’s undersized at 218!!?  I don’t really know what his deal is and I’m not sure the team has the time or can afford to figure it out!?  He played RB at NorthWestern and made the transition to LB as a Senior…..forgive me for not oozing confidence.

Dadi Nicolas:  Again forgive me for not brimming over with confidence.  3yr vet w/ 2 years in Kansas City.  I don’t really know that their LB room is all that good to begin with and he was cut from that…..It doesn’t go far to inspire confidence in his ability to back up two of the best in the game. THIS JUST IN…..HE WAS WAIVED TODAY!

Austin Calitro:  6′ 240lbs…..this is almost the extent of information I have and can find on the guy.  Practice squad guy, a few different teams INCLUDING US!  What the crap is going on here….we’ve seen him we know him….maybe we are thinking KNjr can do soemthing different with him!

KJ and Bobby are two of the best playing the game and I recognize that.  There is obviously going to be fall off from there if one of those guys goes down.  But you are talking about some BIG fall off.  Are you gonna stick Warren Long out in a Defense to replace either one of those guys…..It makes my butt hole tight thinking about it, really.

Let me make a quick case for one of my favorites…..

Ben Boulware:  Clemson, 2 yr floating around the league.  Captain on a Clemson National Championship team.  Defensive MVP of title game.  Doesn’t show well, doesn’t test well, but watch the film that SOB is alway around the ball.  He is always where he should be and has a “game speed” that I really enjoy watching.  Taking a “flier” on him is much more valuable than some kid who played LB for 1 year in college.

Final thought:  If you aren’t paying attention to this story line you should be.  Bobby and KJ are sitting at years 7 and 8 career.  They’ve already outlasted the 3.3yr avg.  They’ve been to Pro Bowls and the Super Bowl.  But how much longer are they going to be around playing at this level?  What is the plan behind them?  What happens if either one of those guys goes down……much less BOTH?!!!  I believe the team has done a pretty great job of increasing “positional group competition” throughout the roster….except here and it has me worried a bit.

Here it is folks!  A new podcast.  In this episode we focused on some of the wierd stuff people have said over the past few weeks.  It still boggles my mind that some of these old story lines are still being talked about in the national media.  But that’s why Dad and I started this whole thing!  We sincerely just want people to see the greater picture.  Sure our take might not be the “right” take but it certainly is, or can be a different take then the national media!  I hope you all enjoy!
